    Over the years, I’ve visited Copacabana whenever I get up to Manchester on business. Compared with the past, it has most definitely lost its charm. For me and my friends (who were once regulars) it was the best and friendliest multi-cultural scenes in Manchester. That has changed for the worse. There is less of a cultural spread, it is no longer friendly (apart from the usual meat-market activity in there) and has become a haunt for every salsa-stepping divorcee, Spanish and pretend-Spanish misfit in town. The ones that can’t make the admission fee are to be found on the waste ground opposite the club. Even with the hopeless DJs that have appeared there, playing the same old CDs over-and-over the years, you could still say that ‘Copa’ was a friendly place – no more – those days have gone. This reason is due to a shift in quality of its clientele. Not just are the interesting people staying away, the club owner exacerbates the issue by allowing a horde of his Spanish speaking pals in free of charge - this has grown to become a significant clique hanging around the DJ booth. It’s one of the first things I noticed the last time I was in the club. Unfortunately, contrary to adding to the atmosphere, they never mix with and often look down on the Brits in there unless it’s a male stalking a female of course. Recently one has been becoming territorial and has been causing trouble with a number of the Brits in there. Neither I nor my friends will go there any more – it’s on the slide.
